2008 HIGHLIGHTS

JANUARY
■ The President of the Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy, states his intention to reform public service broadcasting. A parliamentary commission chaired by Jean-François Copé will be setup on 19 February 2008 to carry out the inquiries required for this reform.
■ Launched in 2005, M6 mobile by Orange proves its success with 1.17 million customers. At the end of 2008, the number of customers reaches 1.5 million.

FEBRUARY
■ M6 acquires the fi lm production company Hugo Films which has a catalogue of feature-length films. This enables the Group to strengthen its position on the market for distributing audiovisual rights.

MARCH
■ M6 Web launches the new catch-up television service, M6 Replay, which is available online. The service will become available on Orange broadband TV and mobile television (Orange World portal) at the start of 2009.

APRIL
■ The M6 Group completes the takeover of the Cyréalis group which operates websites with editorial content on the latest technology (clubic.com), video games (jeuxvideo.fr) and e-business (neteco.com) as well as the price comparison website (achetezfacile.com). This acquisition signifi cantly expands the M6 Group’s content offer and internet services and enables the Group to join the list of the 15 most visited websites in France.

MAY
■ The M6 and W9 channels are chosen by the CSA to form part of the Mobile Personal TV offer.

JUNE
■ Exceptional resources are deployed for the Group’s channels and websites in order to provide coverage for EURO 2008 football matches.

OCTOBER
■ The M6 channel is broadcast in HD on DTT.

NOVEMBER
■ M6 enters into an interprofessional agreement to modernise relations between writers, producers and broadcasters and makes a commitment to all the professional organisations in the audiovisual sector to maintain its support for new, rich and diverse French programmes.
■ The number of people visiting the Group’s websites exceeds 13 million (source: Nielsen NetRatings).

DECEMBER
■ The new HD broadcasting control room is opened.
■ The Distance-Selling Division becomes “Ventadis”, regrouping the two flagship brands M6 Boutique and Mistergooddeal. The merger is testament to the Group’s desire to combine the expertise of these two distance-selling operators.
■ M6 holds first place for the top 100 viewing figures for 2008 across all channels, with the Euro 2008 France vs. Italy match on 17 June 2008.
■ W9 ends the year with an average share of the national audience of 1.8 in 2008. The channel has doubled its share of the audience in one year.

  • December , 31: W9 ended the year with an average audience share of 3.5% of DTT-equipped 4 year olds and over and positioned itself as the leader of new DTT channels. The channel can already be received by 30 million French people.
  • November, 20: The CSA granted an HD DTT channel to M6, which will enable this channel to gradually extend the HD broadcasting to programmes such as drama and Euro 2008 matches.
  • July, 27: PagesJaunes Group and M6 Group announced a strategic internet partnership, with a view to jointly develop the annoncesjaunes.fr website and make it the French leader for online multi-segment classified ads.
  • July, 23: M6 Mobile topped the one million customers mark and became the leading alternative mobile phone operator on its 15-25 year old target, thereby meeting the objectives it had set itself a year early.
  • May, 25: M6 acquired the exclusive distribution rights for half of Euro 2008 matches, including some of the French team, to be broadcast in HD on M6, W9 and M6.fr.
  • April, 19: M6 Group announced the purchase of a 9% shareholding in US film production company Summit Entertainment LLC, thus becoming its distributor in France.
  • March, 19: M6 becomes the first French nationwide TV channel to use a unique live subtitling technology, in order to increase deaf and hard of hearing people’s access to TV programmes.
  • March, 08: M6 celebrates its 20th anniversary.
  • February, 13: Acquisition of a 4,000 m2 building located in Neuilly sur Seine, France, where several Group entities will be transferred.
  • January, 15: M6 Group acquired the Téva channel in full.
  • January, 04: Vivendi, TF1 and M6 finalised an agreement for the merger of French pay TV participants TPS and Canal+Group in the new Canal+France entity, of which M6 owns 5.1% after contributing its 34% stake in TPS.

  • December, 15: 20th anniversary of Paris Première.
  • November, 01: Release of Ne le dis à personne by Guillaume Canet, coproduced by M6 Films (2.7 million tickets sold, 13th in the 2006 boxoffice).
  • October, 31 : M6.fr moves up 5 places in the top 30 most visited websites in France, and ranks 24th for the first time with nearly 4.35 million unique visitors. M6video.fr is the most visited VOD website in France.
  • October, 11: Pas le temps, Prison Break, French theme tune, performed by Faf Larage and marketed by M6 Interactions tops the charts.
  • October, 01: Launch of 66 Minutes, a new weekly news magazine hosted by Aïda Touihri.
  • September, 25: 1,000th issue of Turbo, the automobile and motorbike magazine hosted by Dominique Chapatte.
  • September, 20: Desperate Housewives season 1 available on demand on m6video.fr.
  • September, 01: M6 makes the headlines with the launch of the hugely successful Prison Break series (an average 5.8 million viewers in September / December 2006).
  • July, 04: Suez Group sells its 5% shareholding in M6 to Compagnie Nationale à Portefeuille (CNP) Group, controlled by Albert Frère.
  • July, 03: For the 2nd year, M6 repeats the Talent M6 show and looks into the life of 5 young artists for two months, broadcast on its Free-to-Air channel and websites.
  • June, 28: Release of the film Nos jours heureux, distributed by SND (1.5 million tickets sold in 2006).
  • June, 12: M6 broadcasts in HD 31 matches of the Football World Cup; a success as records were beaten several times over (record 6.3 million viewers for the Brazil-Croatia match).
  • June, 07: Launch of Laura, le compte à rebours a commencé,M6 first summer series.
  • May, 23: Launch of the Desperate Housewives series and rollout of exceptional features on mobile internet : exclusive video
  • contents, accessible from the OrangeWorld and M6 mobile by Orange portals, as well as on the M6 Gallery and i-Mode websites (2.5G and 3G).
  • April, 22: Launch of D&CO, a new home improvement show hosted by Valérie Damidot (an average 5.1 million prime-time viewers).
  • April, 19: Release of OSS 117, co-produced by M6 Films (2.3 million tickets sold in 2006).
  • April, 12: The film Astérix and the Vikings produced by M6 Studio and distributed by SND (1.3 million tickets sold in 2006) is released.
  • March, 31: 1st anniversary of W9, the leading DTT channel.
  • March, 02: M6 renewed its exclusive agreement with Olympique de Marseille for 3 years, regarding all home matches played in 3 different European competitions (Champions’ League qualifying rounds, Intertoto Cup and UEFA Cup).
  • February, 23: Success of Nouvelle Star on m6.fr with 300,000 videos viewed on the 1st day.
  • February, 21 : M6 mobile passes the 300,000 subscriber mark
  • January, 31 : M6 sponsorship of the “Graines de boss” competition, open to students and trade apprentices, rewarding the best start-up projects.
  • January, 23 : Launch of 12.50 news.
  • January, 15 : Launch of the adventure game show Pékin Express, presented by Stéphane Rotenberg.

  • December 21 : M6 Mobile by Orange crosses the 200,000 subscribers threshold.
  • December 16 : Vivendi Universal, TF1 and M6 announce that they are in negotiations leading to an industrial agreement in the area of pay television.
  • December 15 : turbo.fr, the leading automobile publishing site, celebrates its 5th anniversary with new ergonomics and new articles focused on service.
  • December 12 : Opening of the first M6 Boutique shop in Paris.
  • November 21 : Launch of Paris Première on pay DTT.
  • November 15 : M6 Group, via its Home Shopping Service subsidiary, acquires mistergooddeal.com, one the leading French players in e-commerce, the leader in inventory liquidation of major brands on the Internet.
  • November 9 : Launch of the Auto Turbo magazine, the new automobile magazine, co-published with Motor Presse and M6 Editions.
  • October 19 : M6 successfully runs French dramas with a comedy theme with the broadcast of On ne prête qu’aux riches bringing together Michèle Bernier and Axelle Laffont (5.4 million viewers).
  • October 7 : M6 announces that it will be the leading free to air broadcaster for the football World Cup (in number of matches) by broadcasting live and in High Definition 31 of the 64 matches.
  • September 28: M6 broadcasts the 1st episode of a new French drama Merci les enfants vont bien telling the trials and tribulations of a large family (5.4 million viewers).
  • September 4 : Launch of 100% foot, the new weekly magazine presented by Estelle Denis.
  • August 30 : M6 Interactions becomes the majority shareholder in the monthly free news magazine Citato, designed to introduce 15 to 20 year old to the press.
  • July 27 : release in cinemas of the film Mr et Mrs Smith, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, co-produced by M6.
  • July 2 : M6 is the exclusive French broadcaster of Live 8, 8 free concerts organised worldwide by Bob Geldof for the fight against poverty in Africa.
  • June 30 : Laurent Boyer and M6 Group work in collaboration with Road Safety for the broadcast of an advertising spot on prevention concerning wearing a seat belt in the back seat at holiday times.
  • June 17 : Ricardo Gomez Raymundo becomes the new manager of Girondins de Bordeaux.
  • June 9 : Launch of the 1st commercial offer of M6 Mobile by Orange: a innovative fixed price subscription aimed at the 15 to 25 year olds.
  • May 16 : Purchase by SND of the copyrights catalogue of Société Nouvelle de Cinématographie (SNC) for the release in cinemas, video and television of over 450 films, including the Gendarmes series.
  • May 9 : M6 makes the headlines when broadcasting, for the first time, Star Wars’ double trilogy, following the story chronologically.
  • May 3 : M6 innovates by broadcasting the documentary: Hitler, la folie d’un homme, a new documentary in colour retracing the dark Nazi era.
  • April 26 : Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom attracts nearly 6.1 million viewers
  • April 6 : The film Brice de Nice is released. It was co-produced by M6 (4.4 million in box office ticket sales in 2005).
  • March 31 : M6 Music is launched on DTT under the name W9 on channel 9.
  • March 31 : Launch of M6 Music Hits.
  • March 21 : The Ilona Mitrecey song, Un monde parfait, becomes n°1 singles sales, an achievement confirmed in the whole year 2005.
  • February 17 : The singers, Chimène Badi and Amel Bent discovered through M6 music shows, are the top selling artists in terms of albums and singles in the same week.
  • February 10 : M6 concludes a mobile phone agreement with Orange: M6 Mobile by Orange.
  • February 3 : all time record audience levels set for the TV series Les 4400, co-produced by Francis Ford Coppola, with 6.2 million viewers
  • January 10 : Launch of M6 Music Rock and M6 Music Black
  • January 3 : Launch of Kaamelott, a new short drama with a different tone.
  • January 2 : M6 rallies to the aid of the South Asia tsunami survivors.

  • December, 10: Camera Café, ça va déchirer ce soir, primetime inspired by the famous cult mini-series starring Yvan Le Bolloc’h and Bruno Solo, attracts 5.5 million viewers
  • November, 1: record audience for a film on M6 with The Mask of Zorro (7.5 million viewers).
  • October, 14: M6 parodies reality TV with Gloire et Fortune, la grande imposture.
  • October, 13: M6 signs an exclusive contract with UEFA to broadcast the next two finals (2005 and 2006) of the UEFA Cup as well as the Super Cup in 2005.
  • September, 2: Le Pensionnat de Chavagnes attracts 6.2 million viewers for its 1st episode. M6.fr proposes a new high definition video service.
  • August : The single Dragostea Din Tei released by the Moldavian group O-Zone on 14 April in France becomes the summer’s favourite song and top selling single for the year.
  • July, 1 : M6 joins the Euronext index for the 100 highest capitalisation values of firms that are listed on the Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and Lisbon Stock Exchanges.
  • June, 30: M6 Films co-productions ( Podium, Jeux d’enfants, Les 11 commandements) win all of the NRJ Ciné Awards for French productions.
  • June, 9: the Fan 2magazine, edited by M6 Éditions, receives an OJD star* for the best progression in absolute sales value in the category of print magazines.
  • June, 3: M6 realises for the first time a high definition broadcast: Nouvelle Star.
  • May, 7: M6 finalises the acquisition in full of the share capital of Paris Première, in which the Group already had a 10.6% shareholding.

  • 23 déc. Les travaux sont terminés au 89 avenue Charles de Gaulle. Les pionniers de M6 commencent à quitter Paris pour Neuilly.
  • 16 déc. TPS, la Télévision par Satellite est lancée.
  • 6 oct. La télévision au féminin fait son apparition sur le câble puis TPS avec le lancement de Téva.

  • 31 janvier C´est un Emmanuel Chain ému qui reçoit le 7 d´Or du meilleur magazine d´information et de société pour Capital.
  • 3 janvier M6 acquiert à Neuilly le 89 avenue Charles de Gaulle qui deviendra, après restructuration complète, le siège du groupe.
  • 1er janvier M6 publicité devient régisseur de Antilles TV, première chaîne de télévision martiniquaise

  • 7 déc. Nicolas de Tavernost est à son tour désigné Homme de l´année par le magazine Stratégies
  • 28 sept. L´action M6 est introduite au second marché de la Bourse de Paris au prix unitaire de 260 francs, valorisant M6 à 2.6 milliards de francs.
  • 22 sept. Pour la première fois M6 est première chaîne en audience à 20h30 grâce au film "Les hommes préfèrent les blondes"
  • Septembre Ophélie fait sa première apparition sur M6 dans Hit Machine. La chaîne et les téléspectateurs remercient Laurent Boyer d´avoir découvert la belle dans un institut de beauté. Mais que faisait-il là?
  • 6 septembre C´est une première en Europe, M6 diffuse ses informations en numérique.
  • Avril M6 installe un bureau à Nancy puis, dans la foulée à Grenoble.
  • 1er février Création de M6 droits audiovisuels qui commercialise les productions M6.

  • 15 avril M6 se porte candidate à l´Union Européenne de la radiotélévision.
  • 31 mars Entrée en vigueur de la loi Sapin sur la publicité favorisant la transparence des relations commerciales.
  • 14 mars Lancement du magazine Zone Interdite à 20h50. Pour le premier numéro, Patrick de Carolis profite de la diffusion dominicale pour inviter Patrick Poivre d´Arvor, qui est libre ce soir là.
  • 8 mars Les fans de séries vont être comblés puisque la chaîne Série Club fait son apparition sur le Câble
  • 18 janvier M6 reçoit son premier "7 d´or", grâce à Culture Rock d´Alain Gardinier, sacrée meilleure émission musicale

  • 31 déc. M6 boucle son premier exercice bénéficiaire avec 106 millions de francs.
  • 8 oct. Reprise de Logoland et son catalogue de 2000 heures de programmes.
  • 1er oct. création de M6 Interactions qui commercialise les produits dérivés de la marque M6.
  • 21 juillet M6 change de satellite et passe par le Télécom 3B.
  • 12 avril La cinq s´excuse pour cette interruption définitive des programmes.

  • 1er janvier Création de Métropole Production, chargée de réaliser les magazines et les émissions produites par M6.

  • 19 décembre : M6 aime le cinéma et crée M6 Films, filiale de coproduction des films de cinéma.
  • Octobre : M6 débarque à Marseille pour son Six minutes local
  • Septembre : Ouverture de bureaux locaux à Tours et Lille.
  • 22 mai : Dernière augmentation du capital de M6 : 200 millions de francs. Avec cette augmentation, ils ont déjà investi 1 100 millions de francs depuis 1987.
  • 5 mai : 17 000 jeunes réunis à Bercy pour se trémousser sur la musique de la "plus grande discothèque du monde", ancêtre du "Dance Machine".
  • 22 février : M6 devient membre de l´ACT, l´association des télévisions commerciales européennes.
  • 17 janvier : Nouvelle contrainte réglementaire : deux nouveaux décrets "Tasca" introduisent des quotas de diffusion aux heures de grande écoute, particulièrement difficiles à respecter pour M6.

  • 7 octobre : M6 est la première et la seule chaîne française à afficher une signalétique en quatre couleurs destinée à préciser à quel public les films et téléfilms s´adressent. Le CSA reprendra l´idée pour l´imposer à l´ensemble des chaînes en 1996.
  • 8 août : M6 navigue avec le triangle de "Ouest France": le plus grand rassemblement de planches à voile au monde.
  • 1er juillet : L´amendement Schreiner supprime la possibilité d´une seconde coupure publicitaire dans les œuvres audiovisuelles.
  • 31 janvier : Premier journal d´info locale à Bordeaux diffusé à 20h54, le premier d´une longue série.
  • 2 janvier : L´audimat est remplacé par le médiamat.
